8 Anime Series I'm Stoked For

Today, I'll like to share with you why I have decided to keep myself well and alive, i.e what series in particular I'm looking forward to in 2015 thus far.

An actual gif I could completely relate to 24/7

1. Project Itoh

Project Itoh is actually a stage name for famous writer Satoshi Itoh, who specialises in science-fiction. He has written short stories and novels, including Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots.

Sadly, he passed away in 2009 from Cancer at the age of 34.

Please rest in peace, your legacy will live on.

In 2015, 3 different movies, all of which adapted from his novels, will be released:

Left to right: Genocidal Organ, <Harmony>, The Empire of Corpses

I AM SO STOKED FOR THIS. I SWEAR. WOULD YOU JUST LOOK AT HOW PROMISING THE OFFICIAL SITE LOOKS?

Genocidal Organ aka Gyakusatsu Kikan

Shit, I can't take the heat.

Published in 2007, the novel was rated a 4/5 from goodreads and was awarded the Best SF of 2007 in the SF magazine.

I heard the plot is amazing. Unfortunately, the novel lost its elegance when it was being translated from Japanese to English. The Japanese writing was fine and has much more to express. If given the ability, I would most definitely read the original one. Here is the synopsis from the novel:

"The war on terror exploded, literally, the day Sarajevo was destroyed by a homemade nuclear device. The leading democracies transformed into total surveillance states, and the developing world has drowned under a wave of genocides. The mysterious American John Paul seems to be behind the collapse of the world system, and it's up to intelligence agant Clavis Shepherd to track John Paul across the wreckage of civilisations, and to find the true heart of darkness  a genocidal organ."

The anime will be directed by Shukou Murase under Manglobe (see their works here), the guy who also directed Deadman Wonderland and Ergo Proxy. You now see why it's that this is going to be a feast for your eyes?

<Harmony>

Promotional Video for <Harmony>

Harmony was given the Seuin Award. At first I wasn't so convinced, but then I went on to read the reviews and was amazed at the amount of praises for his exceptional brilliance. Here is the plot from the novel as summarised by a reader:

"In a world where human life is a precious global resource that must be protected at all costs, everything about a person  choices, emotions, biochemistry, cell metabolism  is monitored and assessed by computer systems, 24/7. A variety of complex feedback loops are in place to ensure optimum conservation of that resource, including everything from good old-fashioned peer pressure to mandatory inpatient psychiatric treatment.

The story focuses around Tuan Kirie, and flashes back and forth between her troubled adolescence in a utopian/dystopian Japan and the global crisis she's trying to unravel as an adult working for what is essentially the police and investigation arm of the World Health Organisation. Their society conditions everyone to focus on the social welfare of everyone around them, even to the extent of utilising nanotechnology to trigger internal warnings when your emotions are reaching socially inappropriate levels. Tuan has never fit in, though, and has long sought out ways to harm herself as an act of rebellion, and frequently beats herself up for never having been strong enough to complete suicide."

The film will be directed by Michael Arias and Takashi Nakamura under STUDIO 4 (see their works here)

The Empire of Corpses aka Shisha no Teikoku

Now this one is a little different. Satoshi-san passed away before having the chance to complete this masterpiece and it was thus entrusted to his friend, Toh EnJoe, to fulfill his dying wish. With two of the finest Japanese writers combined, it immediately produced a sensational novel that won both the Nihon SF Taisho Special Award and the Seiun Award.

Here is the synopsis:

"The story begins in late-19th century Europe, where a new technology has spread that allows dead bodies to be installed with an artificial soul to create 'Frankensteins' corpses which can be utilised as laborers and soldiers and this new technology has spurred an industrial revolution across the Western world.

A medical student in London named John H. Watson (who will later become a partner to Sherlock Holme) is scouted by a government agency to serve as a secret agent, and receives orders to infiltrate Afghanistan as an army medic. Watson discovers that Frankensteins are being used in huge numbers for military purposes in Afghanistan. He gradually becomes aware of the fact that 'The One', the original creature created nearly 100 years earlier by the genius scientist Victor Frankenstein, is still alive somewhere in the world, and seems to be orchestrating some sort of plot. Watson leaves Afghanistan and crosses over to post-Meiji Restoration Japan to meet up with Rhett Butler and the lovely Hadaly of the Pinkerton Detective Agency. In pursuit of The One, they head for America, which still recovering from the Civil War, and finally catch up with The One."

Ryoutarou Makihara will be in charge of this film under WIT STUDIO (see their works here), the producers of ATTACK ON THE FREAKING TITAN.
__________________________________________________________________________________________

I can't begin to tell you how excited I really am for these 3 big hits to be released, and how much I yearn to read the Japanese novels if I were able to.
The thing is I have read but I don't read. I read a countable number of books in my life, but many others were just not satisfying enough to bring me through the end. These, however, truly got my attention and I could tell for sure that it's going to be a blast I'll never regret. Such rare talents only come once in a blue moon. I can't wait.

Release dates have yet to be announced but are definitely set in 2015.

2. Shokugeki no Souma

The summary goes like this:

"Yukihira Souma's dream is to become a full-time chef in his father's restaurant and surpass his father's culinary skill. But just as Yukihira graduates from middle school, his father, Yukihira Jouichirou, closes down the restaurant to cook in Europe. Although downtrodden, Souma's fighting spirit is rekindled by a challenge from Jouichirou, which is to survive in an elite culinary school where only 10% of the students graduate. Can Souma survive?"

It's a boring and unjustified summary but you get the gist of it. It has a lot of comedy going on with a little bit of ecchi

gahahaha what the heck

The manga has already hit 3 digits (yes Tsukuda Yuuto, it was high time you considered bringing this to the animated world) and I was actually planning to read this when it first started out. Sadly, I don't have a thing for manga... and it was just left sitting in my bookmark for years.

But good golly! Because:

Oh, YES. And on the 4TH OF FREAKING APRIL.

I was really happy when they announced it for animation. I mean, what could be more exciting than a competitive cooking show WITH TWO HOT BABES *restraints self*

3. Haikyuu!! Season 2

Damn it Kageyama your face!

Hit me already because this was the BEST THING thus far that has happened to me in 2015. I was extremely overjoyed by this news. Why? Let me share with you something.

After finishing this anime not too long ago, I believe I was suffering from severe withdrawal symptoms (No kid). I was really hooked on this anime, so I was really upset that I finished it. I thought about it countless times, scrolling through the many screenshots I had taken, and felt that this 'family' was so real to me, yet I lost it..
"HEAR MY CRIES PRODUCERS!!!"

I became restless and went on hunting for more animes to fill the void, but each time I tried a new series, I'd turn it down in less than 15 minutes because it didn't feel the same. I couldn't rewatch it either because everything was so fresh in my head. It continued for a month...

It's scary how I'm able to become so addicted and attached to a show. Besides the minor ones I had with Ao no Exorcist, Attack on Titan etc., this one turned out really bad.

私わおたく...?

たぶんたぶん...

But I can't wait to see them enter spring tournament and be overwhelmed by their humour yet again! I even got my hands on their official guidebook not too long ago...

Aside from character profiles, episode summaries and sketches, the guidebook includes posters, bookmarks and a collectible card. ALL THESE FOR ONLY SGD 12.20 AT KINOKUNIYA SWEET HEAVENS! But do note that it is entirely in Japanese.

じゃまたね( ノ≧∀≦)ノ
Date is to be announced. To see my review on Season 1, click here.

4. Yamada Kun to Nananin no Majo

The plot goes like this:

"Ryuu Yamada is known as a delinquent in his high school; he has been bored of classes after one year of attending school. One day, he accidentally falls from a flight of stairs onto Urara Shiraishi, the ace student of the school. Yamada wakes up to find that he has swapped bodies with her! The two try to reverse the change and discover that kissing triggers the body swap. On the suggestion of student council vice-president Toranosuke Miyamura, they revive the Supernatural Studies Club. The club encounters other "witches" with different powers that are activated with a kiss!"

I would, on normal circumstances, be completely turned off by a horde of girls. But I watched the OVA and I really love the quirky humour!

They were discussing on the club's expenditure and what to do in the upcoming festival. After realising it was a hefty 50k yen grand prize, Yamada and Itoh were really hyped up:

He was SO passionate about it HAHAHA

Then there was one part where they were coming up with stupid ideas for the performance festival:

I was laughing my ass off man

There are a lot hilarious scenes, however A LOT of kissing going on too, but I'm pretty sure I'll last for this one. I can't wait!
There would be 12 episodes and will start airing on April 14.

5. Shingeki no Kyojin Season 2

FINALLY. About time to go to that basement already damn it.

Date is to be announced. To see my review on Season 1, click here.

6. Under the Dog

Call me biased but who wouldn't be turned on by such an amazing art... shit.

This OVA is a little different. Hiroaki Yura turned to Kickstarter for crowd funding instead of  doing the norm, i.e work under a production company. He mentioned why:

"We also knew this type of anime was not so in favor with these production committees due to the fact that they don't target core otaku audiences in Japan, therefore it would be likely to not take off at all.

Since we are targeting the general public, encompassing the whole world, not just Japan, we felt it was appropriate to bring Under the Dog to Kickstarter."

I would totally fund this. Looks FUCKING cool to me.
Click here to watch their campaign video

The synopsis:

"Under the Dog takes place in 2025 in Neo Tokyo, five years after a devastating terrorist attack at the Tokyo Olympics. In the wake of the tragedy, the U.N. formed a covert ops unit dedicating to seeking out, then eliminating those responsible for the attack. Anthea Kallenberg, a girl of Swedish descent is a member of this elite group who has honed her combat abilities and has become a deadly assassin, but must come to terms as to who she really is."

It was to be released just as a 24 minute OVA, but due to the high speculation and support, they have now also considered making it into a TV series (yay!).

Anyway, look at what they posted for April Fools' hahahaha click here.

Gonna get my ass all burnt up in late 2015.

7. Ore Monogatari!!

Now this, has a unique plot. You know how romance and shoujo animes always have both characters being popular/handsome/pretty/attractive/you-name-it, either that it could be the prince charming who likes some shutdown girl or whatever mundane clichéd plot you could think of?

Not anymore for this one!

"Takeo Gouda is a giant guy with a giant heart. Too bad the girls don't want him! (They want his good-looking best friend, Sunakawa.) Used to being on the sidelines, Takeo simply stands tall and accepts his fate. But one day when he saves a girl named Yamato from a harasser on the train, his (love!) life suddenly takes an incredible turn!"

I've watched a few good shoujo/romance movies like Kaichou wa Maid sama, Kimi ni Todoke and Tonari no Kaibutsu kun which were all REALLY FUNNY. And it was not entirely a romance genre.
However, I did watch those shoujo animes like Ao Haru Ride and Sukitte Ii Na Yo which were... very cheesy and boring and draggy as well.

In general, I could say it's always a structured plot, sometimes with a twist here and there, but this is pretty much the standard draft:

Foolproof guide to making the one and only perfect romance anime

Step 1: Good-looking guy likes good-looking girl/average girl and vice versa
Step 2: Relationship starts to blossom a bit
Step 3: Another good looking popular bitch (make her the childhood friend of the prince charming for added spiciness) comes in and ruins the shit out of everything
OR
Step 3: Friend of girl likes prince charming too and this leads to some sour friendship/competition/argument
Step 4: Guy and girl finally decided it was time to clearly indicate to each other their feelings after 73821731 episodes.
Step 5: All other competitors then obediently back down.

*Delete and twist wherever necessary.
**100% success rate.

Meh, I could swear by this. Anyhoo, I am excited to see what would turn out for this one since it's a tad bit odd, and this time, prince charming doesn't get the spotlight (OOOOOOOH BURN).
This 24 episode series would be coming to you on April 9!

8. Shisou Series

Of course it wouldn't be exciting if there wasn't a horror film to watch this year.
The synopsis:

"The story centers around a first-year university student Uni who is from countryside. At a circle in university, he meets a 25-year-old senior student called "Shishou" (Master), who is a deep occult fanatic. Guided by Shishou and his circle friends, Uni investigate various urban legends and paranormal phenomena."

The plot reminds of Psychic Detective Yakumo though, except that this is a whole lot more dark and intense. Watch the promo video:

The TV anime release date is to be announced.

That's about all that is worthy for the talk for now, though I'm pretty sure there are many other good animes to come for this year. Ok, till then!
